Expert back pain treatment.

Low back pain can be very frustrating and is by far the most common condition that we treat here in the clinic.

Two types of back pain.

Two types of back pain patients generally present themselves to the clinic.

Acute debilitating pain and muscle spasm

This comes on suddenly, often you feel stuck in one position, can't move or bend your back. This pain is very scary and sometimes results in patients attending an A&E department or their GP.

Chronic low back pain

A pain that has been present in your back for longer than 6 weeks. Often patients report to us that they have had it for many years.

If you are suffering with chronic back pain it can negatively affect your quality of life and mood. Often people are confused as to why they have the pain and what they need to do to get better. They have been given vague information or, unfortunately, misinformation by other therapists or GPs. See our back pain FAQs below.

We have helped hundreds of back pain cases become pain-free and better than ever before by building strength, implementing long-term habits and making sure their treatment is individualised.

“I would highly recommend Kieran at Reflex Physiotherapy. I visited Kieran over a number of weeks as I was experiencing back pain and needed to return to marathon training.”

Back pain questions.

Straight answers to what people ask us most.

I think I have a slipped disc?

Often patients think that their back pain is a result of a slipped disc (also known as a herniation or prolapsed disc). This is a common but misunderstood condition. It refers to a condition where one of the discs in the spine protrudes out of its normal position. When the annulus fibrosus tears or weakens, the nucleus pulposus can push through, creating a bulge.

What is sciatica?

Sciatica refers to pain caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve or its nerve roots in the lower back. The sciatic nerve travels from the lower spine through the buttocks and down each leg. Sciatica typically affects one side of the body and can range from mild discomfort to severe, persistent pain. Symptoms may develop gradually or begin suddenly following certain movements or activities. With the right assessment and treatment approach, over 90% of sciatica cases resolve without the need for surgery.

Will my back pain resolve with pain medication?

Anti-inflammatory medication may help in the short term but often the pain reoccurs.

Should I get surgery? Do I need back surgery?

Often people opt for surgery prematurely or as a quick fix. Over 90% of back pain patients do not require surgery. Unnecessary surgery can often make your back pain worse. Your physiotherapist will advise if you need to see a surgeon or not.

Should I seek professional help?

Yes. Don't wait for your symptoms to worsen. Your physiotherapist will educate you about slipped discs, which help to understand the condition. Our physiotherapists will conduct a thorough assessment, develop a tailored rehab plan and help you to make informed decisions about your recovery.
