Expert physiotherapy to relieve hip pain and restore movement.

  • Is it sore to lie on?
  • Are you limping?
  • Is it stopping you from walking or running?
  • Does it affect you on the stairs?
  • Do you have difficulty putting on shoes and socks?

If you have answered yes to some or all of the above, then you likely have hip pain and we can help you.

At Reflex Physiotherapy, we have helped hundreds of hip pain cases become pain-free and better than ever before by building strength, implementing long-term habits and making sure their treatment is individualised. Our approach combines a thorough assessment, hands-on treatment where appropriate, and tailored exercises to help reduce pain, improve mobility and restore strength and confidence in movement. What you won’t get is a generic exercise sheet or a one size fits all treatment. This does not work.

Hip pain questions.

Straight answers to what people ask us most.

What causes hip pain?

Hip pain can develop for many reasons. It may originate from the hip joint itself, the surrounding muscles and tendons, or structures in the lower back and pelvis. Common causes of hip pain include:

  • Hip osteoarthritis: wear-related changes in the joint that may cause pain, stiffness and reduced mobility.
  • Hip bursitis and gluteal tendinopathy: irritation or overload of the tissues around the outside of the hip, often causing pain when lying on your side or walking.
  • Hip flexor strain: injury or overload of the muscles at the front of the hip, sometimes associated with running, kicking or sudden movements.
  • Groin pain and adductor injuries: discomfort in the inner thigh or groin, often associated with sport or changes in activity.
  • Hip impingement: structural features of the hip that may contribute to groin pain, particularly during deep hip movements.
  • Running and sports injuries: hip pain caused by repetitive loading, training errors or sudden increases in exercise.
  • Referred pain from the lower back: problems in the lumbar spine can sometimes cause pain around the hip or buttock.

Identifying the likely cause of your symptoms is an important first step in choosing the right treatment.

What types of hip pain do you treat?

Our physiotherapy service can help assess and manage a range of hip-related problems, including:

  • Hip osteoarthritis and joint stiffness.
  • Hip bursitis and gluteal tendinopathy.
  • Hip flexor and adductor muscle strains.
  • Running-related hip pain.
  • Sports-related groin pain.
  • Hip and buttock pain that may be referred from the lower back.

Do I need a scan before seeing a physiotherapist?

No. Many hip problems can initially be assessed through your symptoms and a physical examination. Imaging may be recommended when clinically indicated; your physiotherapist will advise you if you need a scan.

What to expect at your first hip physiotherapy appointment?

We understand that pain and uncertainty can make it difficult to know where to start. Your first appointment is an opportunity to discuss your concerns and understand the options available to you. Your appointment will typically include:

  • A discussion of your symptoms: when your pain started, what makes it better or worse, and how it affects your daily life.
  • A physical assessment: an examination of your hip movement, strength and relevant functional activities.
  • An explanation of your findings: your physiotherapist will discuss the likely causes of your symptoms and answer your questions.
  • A personalised treatment plan: you will receive practical advice and, where appropriate, exercises or treatment to begin your recovery. Your progress will be reviewed and your treatment plan adjusted as we increase the load on the tissues so that you don’t break down when you return to activity.

You do not have to let hip pain dictate how you move, exercise or enjoy everyday life.
